Mulled Pinot Noir

A mix of warm spices and seasonal fruit make this mulled wine a holiday standout.

Serves 6 to 8

  • 1 1/2 cups apple cider
  • 4 cinnamon sticks, halved
  • 4 whole star anise
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole fresh cranberries
  • 1 bottle (750 milliliters) pinot noir or other light red wine
  • 2 small Cara Cara or other seedless oranges, very thinly sliced (discard ends)

In a medium saucepan, combine cider, cinnamon sticks, star anise and cloves. Bring to a simmer over medium heat; lower heat and simmer 3 to 4 minutes to infuse spices into cider. Stir in sugar and cranberries. Pour in wine; bring just to a simmer and remove from heat.

Place 2 orange slices in each serving mug; strain wine mixture into mugs. Pick out cinnamon sticks, cranberries and star anise from strainer to garnish each serving (discard cloves). Serve hot.
