Paleo 101: What You Need to Know

Paleo 101: What You Need to Know

There’s no right or wrong way to Thanksgiving. That’s why we’re giving you the 101 on special diets. Everyone should have something to eat at the Thanksgiving dinner table — whether they have grains or not.

Eating paleo? You probably know that the diet typically consists of mostly vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, oils from fruits and nuts (such as extra-virgin olive oil and walnut oil), meats and fish. Foods typically not included on the paleo diet include grains, legumes, potatoes, dairy, refined sugar, salt and highly processed foods.

If you’re eating paleo on Thanksgiving, you’ve got plenty of options that could fit your diet. For some easy dishes others might enjoy, too, cook fresh cranberries with cinnamon, orange zest and orange juice for a cranberry sauce without refined sugar. Or, bake up some grain-free dinner rolls to share. Don’t be afraid to tell your host that you follow this diet, too.

Hosting Someone on a Paleo Diet? What You Should Know

If you’re hosting someone who is following a paleo diet, keep the tips above in mind, and you can help them keep on track by forgoing most sweeteners and salt. Roasted turkey, prepared simply and without stuffing, is usually paleo-friendly. Roasted and mashed turnips or yams (skipping non-paleo-friendly ingredients such as brown sugar and marshmallows) make delicious side dishes for all guests. Or, serve up one of these tasty options: a mixed greens salad with roasted vegetables, orange slices, crushed nuts and an oil-based dressing or a fruit salad topped with pomegranate seeds and a squeeze of orange juice.
