Win New Year’s In With These Killer Apps
Don’t believe the hype that New Year’s Eve is overrated. It’s just that going out for New Year’s Eve is.
So own New Year’s In — and that means starting with apps. While you probably aren’t going to have someone pass trays around (… or are you?), you can still easily go beyond chips and dips. Here’s all you need for New Year’s Eve appetizers worthy of a big celebration. Most importantly, they all pair well with a glass of bubbly — or more. After all, the best part of an at-home New Year’s Eve? It’s always an open bar.
Stock up on bubbly before (and the day after) the ball drops: Sommelier Select sparkling wines are 20% off from 12/29/18 – 1/1/19.*
Olive Bar Essentials
The olive bar at your local Whole Foods Market is a great place to start. It has antipasti, pickles, peppers and yes, olives too. While varieties vary by store, you can often find unique choices from cheese-filled peppers, grilled artichoke hearts and a feta salad to marinated mixed mushrooms and cornichons. Don’t miss the buttery Castelvetrano olives and marinated olive mix, which are matches for a hearty bread and soft, creamy cheese.
The Right Cheeses, Crackers and Meat
Three to five cheeses are usually ideal for a cheese plate. Select cheeses that are contrasting in taste and texture; balance the sweet with the pungent, the firm with the creamy. Look for standouts like lux and slightly crumbly Somerdale Champagne Cheddar, buttery triple-crème Hervés Mons St. Nuage, funky Hervé Mons Camembert, Emmi Roth’s alpine-style Pavino, and you can’t go wrong with anything from Cowgirl Creamery, like its complex, rich-tasting organic Mt Tam. Add a couple varieties of crackers such as Raincoast Crisps, Rustic Bakery Crackers or Mary’s Gone Crackers Thins, a delicious gluten-free option.
Cut one of the harder cheeses into cubes and a softer cheese into slices or wedges. Fold Principe Prosciutto into quarters and arrange in piles. Fill extra small spaces with green olives, Marcona almonds or candied walnuts, dried figs or cranberries, grapes, apple or pear slices and whole persimmons (for bright pops of color). Then add small bowls of fig spread or honey with honeycomb. Now call it an edible masterpiece.
Shortcut: Your local store offers party-ready cheese platters that are curated by our expert cheesemongers.
An unexpected extra on your cheese and charcuterie plate can make all the difference. Try adding a pâté or Whole Foods Market Truffle Mousse, a pork and chicken liver mousse with truffles, Chablis wine, cèpes and a flavorful blend of herbs and spices. And if you really want to fancy up your New Year’s Eve at home, set out caviar on crushed ice or serve with blinis and melted butter. (Check out this caviar primer before you shop).
Passed Apps the Easy Way
Here’s a secret that many hosts looking to save time already know: Passed appetizers that pass the test can in fact come from the freezer. A platter or two of flaky stuffed pastries like Whole Foods Market Spinach & Cheese Spanakopita or savory-sweet Brie Bites with Mostarda plus Whole Foods Market Artichoke, Kale & Swiss Chard Bites are as easy as heating then arranging on a stylish platter. That’s it — no mixing, chopping or sautéing needed.
